On Sunday we celebrated Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with our Galapagos family. This is a day for celebrating with flowers, praying with candles, recalling stories, eating traditional foods, and generally gathering at the cemetery and in homes with friends and family to remember loved ones who have died. We were served the traditional colada morada (a thick purple, fruity drink) and guagua pan (bread in the shape of children, with icing and sprinkles) both at school on Friday, and at home on Sunday.
Día de los Muertos is also a day to mock Death; it's not as powerful as it might seem. Life and Love always have the last word! Being at the cemetery, with food and flower stands, families chatting, and children playing, felt more like a party than a funeral.
In the spirit of this day, with thanksgiving, we are remembering: my Dad, Uncle Jon, Grandpa Frank & Grandma Gertrude, Grandpa Norman & Grandma Irene, Grandpa Tilman & Grandma Luella, Grandpa Durbin & Grandma Esther, Cousin Kent, aunts and uncles, dear church friends, many friends from Waterford Crossing, former teachers and mentors, and so many others who have made life so rich!
